The monumental Hugo and Nebula award winning SF classic-- Featuring a new introduction by John Scalzi

The Earth's leaders have drawn a line in the interstellar sand--despite the fact that the fierce alien enemy they would oppose is inscrutable, unconquerable, and very far away.  A reluctant conscript drafted into an elite Military unit, Private William Mandella has been propelled through space and time to fight in the distant thousand-year conflict; to perform his duties and do whatever it takes to survive the ordeal and return home.  But "home" may be even more terrifying than battle, because, thanks to the time dilation caused by space travel, Mandella is aging months while the Earth he left behind is aging centuries...

Un libro extraordinario. Se puede tomar como ciencia ficción "dura" y aún así Haldeman deja espacio para el romance. La forma en que la dilatación temporal es usada en el libro es asombrosa y el final es simplemente bello e ingenioso.

This story idea goes all the way back to Homer's The Odyssey.

I read The Forever War a few years ago, but it was a "classic." Overall, I think it is greater than the sum of its parts. I found the story to be short and straight to the point. The writing style was very simple, and there wasn't any suspense or twists and turns in the plot. So I felt it was fine, but not great as a read. However, I loved the core ideas of the book. After I was done, I kept thinking about it for days and weeks. I later read The Forever Peace. While I would also rate that book a 4, I rate the two books together as a 5. This combo of books is in my must read list when SciFi noobs ask for a recommendation.

The first time I read it, I read it twice in the same day. It is that good.

One of the best sci-fi military books ever.

It's a masterpiece. As literature it's direct with barely a wasted word. As a metaphor for the experience of coming home from modern war (okay Vietnam but probably as relevant for any of the wars since)it's unsurpassed.
