On the world called Hyperion, beyond the law of the Hegemony of Man, there waits the creature called the Shrike.  There are those who worship it.  There are those who fear it.  And there are those who have vowed to destroy it.  In the Valley of the Time Tombs, where huge, brooding structures move backward through time, the Shrike waits for them all.  On the eve of Armageddon, with the entire galaxy at war, seven pilgrims set forth on a final voyage to Hyperion seeking the answers to the unsolved riddles of their lives.  Each carries a desperate hope--and a terrible secret.  And one may hold the fate of humanity in his hands.

I would not rank it even in the top 100. The series started decently but quickly degenerated into a series of cliches worthy of gossip magazine. Compared to giants of the SciFi genre such as L Niven, R Silverberg, U Leguin, P K Dick just to name a few Mr D Simmons needs to go back to school.

I read it and the rest. It was okay. I give it a 5 out of 10. I did finish it but didn't love it. It was interesting and complicated but the plot really bothered me. I never really liked the characters.

Classic of space opera. First book is modeled after Canterbury tales and the pilgrims (going to meet the Shrike) are varied and captivating.

I've read quite a few of the SF Masterpieces so far (Foundation Trilogy, Ringworld Quadrology, 2001-3001, Consider Phlebas and other Culture Cyclus Books,..) but none came close to the density of the story, the credibility of the characters, the Awe you will be in after finishing the story with Endymion and the rising sadness of never being able to read something that good ever again. He wrote some other good books, but nothing as exceptional as this one. (Olympos will be a huge let down after reading Hyperion/Endymion)

Hyperion through to the rise of Endymion is outstanding and recommend it to anyone interested in human evolution.

Have not read a better, richer Science Fiction Opera yet. A little to elaborate at times, but really very well narrated.

I found this a little disappointing. Descriptive language is lovely but far too much of it. I like the variety of the different stories and the mixed perspectives. However, I found the references to contemporary-ish works cheesy and the sex scenes are straight out of a Jeffery Archer novel. Also I find the way it ends rather clunky. I was expecting a cliffhanger or better yet the end and it kind of just fizzles out ready for the next book.

At every turn of this book I oscillated between great intrigue and a frustration induced furrowed brow. I love a good space mystery and the shrike legend and the technocore definitely kept me reading but there are so many holes and logical breakdowns in the story that I wouldn't rate this high on an SF AI list. One minute the AI technocore is all-knowing, and the next it can't manage things that our current government is already capable of. Perhaps the inadequacy is explained later but I was left feeling the AI wasn't actually that intelligent or maybe just a very narrowly imagined AI. Actually the high tech of the book is questionable at best. 2001 or Eon do a better job of incorporating far reaching tech and post-human evolution into a relate-able story.
