Anyone read this seminal short work by Ursula K. LeGuin? Brilliant and chilling.
I agree, brilliant and chilling. Perhaps Le Guin's most unremittingly dark story. And certainly one that challenges each one of us. Le Guin is one of the most humane of writers.
Many of her magical realism stories in the collection Orsinian Tales are also quite unsettling. She has a tremendous range that is always informed, as you said, by her humanity. As a writer myself, I greatly admire her ability to tell stories of relatable characters with honesty and simple eloquence.
